Survey
The most expensive city destinations in California
Updated : September 4, 2019According to the cost of lodging, Huntington Beach is the most expensive city in California. That’s the result of a survey conducted by LosAngelesHotels.org. The survey compared hotel rates in 30 urban destinations across California.
Specifically, for each destination, the survey established the average price for the cheapest available double room at properties, Sept.–Oct. 2019, the months when most cities in California reach their highest average hotel rates. Only centrally-located hotels rated at least 3 stars or above were included in the survey.
At an average $223 per night for the least expensive room rates, Huntington Beach leads the rankings. San Jose and Sunnyvale, both in Santa Clara County, come in second and third with average room rates of $198 and $193 per night, respectively. San Francisco ranks fifth most-expensive, with an average room rate of $184 per night.
Los Angeles and San Diego are more affordable, and travelers can expect to spend as little as $126 and $114 per night for a room in these destinations, respectively, in September and October.

About the Methodology
The survey compared 30 urban destinations in California, including the 15 largest California cities by population and 15 other California cities with populations of at least 150,000. For each city, the price for the cheapest available double rooms was established for the following time periods: Sept. 11-14, Sept. 22–25, Oct. 8–11 and Oct. 28–28. Based on that data, an average nightly price was established for each destination. Only centrally-located hotels rated at least 3 stars were included the survey. Rates were established at the end of August based on research conducted on the hotel comparison website Kayak.Press Contact
